Oğuz Kemal Başar is an architect, photographer and researcher based between Italy and Turkey. His work focuses on pastoral landscapes, cultural ecologies and more-than-human systems, investigating how grazing practices, mobility and traditional ecological knowledge shape rural and alpine environments.
He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture, with a specialization in Cultural Landscapes, from Politecnico di Milano. His research is grounded in field-based methodologies, combining ethnography, mapping and visual documentation to explore the relationships between humans, animals and landscapes. His work has developed through field studies across alpine, Mediterranean and arid regions, with a particular focus on traditional land use and vernacular architectures in mountain environments. He has participated in various ecological and cultural research initiatives in the Alpine territories.
He is currently pursuing a PhD on “Protection of Mountain Areas and Ecology” at the Free University of Bozen–Bolzano (unibz), where his research investigates pastoral systems and landscape processes. He is also the co-founder of A30 Architecture, an Istanbul-based practice working at the intersection of space, memory, and environment.
